Just a run of bad luck

Post by ante552 » Sun Jan 28, 2018 3:51 pm

G'day fella's,
I hit portarling sat morning as portland got cancelled!!

Got there about 5ish set up my single paternoster rig with 30cm leader snelked 4/0 oct hooks 4oz star sinker.

Put on a full pilly and didnt cast far maybe 30mtrs.

Anyhow i set the drag and proceeded to set up my other rod
And boom drag starts screaming i had a small struggle getting rod out of between the rocks. Finally did started to attempt to challenge the fish. The pull was quick and hard never really experienced it.
As i slowly started to lock the drag and get a wind in my main line snapped (line im using is a 25pnd saragosa with a 60pn black magic leader)

This is the 3rd time in 3 weeks its happened to me.

What am i doing wrong.

Reel im using is abu garcia overhead c7000i.

Or maybe i need lessons again.

And also does anyone have any good rock fishing places excluding punch bowl and cape bridgewater.

Cheers
Anth

Im not sure but atleast i can say maybe a kingie lol.

Its happened twice at portarlington
And last weekend at portland.

The sensation was great but there was no end result!

I dont mind the walk i just have back and rod reel bag.
And trolley if needed.

Plus the adventure makes it fun

It's happened to me several times - and it is usually a case of the line being under a barnacle covered rock or snag of some sort. The fish hooks up, but if your line is already touching something sharp, when the fish runs, you might lose a few metres under drag pressure, but eventually it will be cut. I've lost large snapper in reefy ground fishing landbased this way quite a few times.

If your note sure where it broke check your line for any small nicks or abrasion that occure more often when land based fishing.

Also where on the pier did you fish? There is an artificial reef about 30 netres out directly in front of the old rock break wall that might of caused the break off.
