Re: Advice needed
i have never fished there myself, but if you look at the afn fishing map for western port (about $10) it will give you a heap of areas for different fish, I believe it also has some gps marks, should give you some places to try.

OK first thing and it goes for all fishing think what the fish is doing - unlike Land based where you are stuck to a few places hoping the fish will come to youante552 wrote:

almost any part of Westernport will hold Gummies but think what they are doing going to or coming from a feeding area - Westernport being very tidal means they will cover a lot of distance with the tide flow and will use the channels as the roads and highways to move around
picking the bottom of the drop off on almost any channel you have a chance of a Gummy
also there is no real X marks the spot rule for fish that move with the tide

Re: Advice needed
Ah ok. Fishing is definitely different with a boat. Was a lot to learn at the start and made a lot of mistakes but was worth it. Love boating now :thumbsup:ante552 wrote:Not yet a close mate of mine has, and ill get some hours on his then ill go buy mineLightningx wrote:You got a boat now mate?ante552 wrote:Hey guys

Idk why people are saying catching decent gummies is an easy thing when you have no experience targeting them or western port in general

Re: Advice needed
Don’t fish for them unless you catch:
Salmon, Yakkas, Slimeys, Trevally, Squid on the day or anything else fresh.
Do a bit of research about areas from Warneet down to Tortoise head, I’d rule out the western channel until you’re more experienced.
Sound around the area you plan to fish for them to gauge what it’s like. Drop the pick on the drop off, and you don’t have to fish deep at all, I’ve been catching them in 10m, not even at the very bottom of the drop off.
As someone mentioned before, what does the fish do? It swims up the bay on the flood and out the bay on the EBb, using the drop offs like a highway to navigate, your job is to place your bait in its path.
Fish whole tides in the area you’re focusing on. I’ve had more success fishing the tides leading up to the full moon, a few days prior and on full moon too, especially when the tide tops out two hours after the sun goes down.
If your bait is fresh, presented perfectly so it doesn’t spin the slightest, and you’re patient, there’s a good chance, just need to work through the rubbish fish. You’re not going to catch the one your after in the first trip or the fourth trip, just need to take the time to learn

Re: Advice needed
As a few people have mentioned, gummies are all over westernport.
Just use your sounder, look for drop off's, fish on the lower side on the ebb, upper side on the flood.
If you fish up the north east corner of westernport, look for the junctions in Bouchier and Boultons channels, where the channel divides, and fish there. Tons of smaller gummies up that area, with bigger ones always a possibility.
Bait wise, gummies are scavengers as well as hunters, people rave about fresh trevally, but on one session, I've had 2 of them literally swim past fresh trevor to pick up a squid ring. My pb was on a ring from an arrow squid that had been in the freezer for at least 3 months, go figure.
Banana prawn is another ripping Bait, but basically just about anything will give you a shout.
