An unexpected fly catch

Post by mazman » Thu Dec 31, 2015 2:09 pm

Hit up sugarloaf reservoir on Christmas eve for a fly fish with basti, started off flicking woolly buggers and other assorted wets around in dark olive and black colours but could only manage follows from a few little reddies. As we worked our way around the bank we spotted a wallaby having a drink at the water’s edge.

As sunset approached we started to hear some slurps on the surface, initially we thought they must’ve been carp based on the sound we were hearing so we tied on some dry flies and let them sit in the area that the fish were feeding in, it didn’t take long for our flies to get taken but whatever was takin them were spitting the flies (or possibly missing them on the take) and we weren’t hooking up. Finally I managed to hook one and after a spirited fight amongst the timber had a 26cm roach on the bank.

We continued fishing as the sun set and I managed to land 3 more roach all around the 25cm mark, including one on a home tied nymph. The roach kept feeding into the night but eventually we couldn’t see our flies and ended up striking at everything close to where we thought are flies were, resulting in our flies spending more time in the air than on the water. So with the moon at our backs and the occasional slurp still to be heard we made our way back to the car.

Nice, I didn't realise we had roach over here. Great effort to catch them on the fly, only ever caught them on bait back in the UK.
Cast, catch and put it back

Nice work, some serious bonus points for catching them on dry flies!
