First Yarra Cod

Post by Mike_M » Sun Jan 31, 2016 10:59 am

Hi all, I haven't posted for a bit - work and family have been keeping me a bit busy for doing much fishing. But that's started to change since I built a canoe and have been able to get out on the Yarra near my house.

I went out this morning at sunrise and paddled upstream, making slower going than usual, but still a straightforward paddle. I stopped off at a likely log, dropped the anchor and chucked a spinnerbait at it for about 10 minutes, then switched to a dark hardbody minnow from Aldi and trolled upstream, just enjoying the paddle. A couple of hundred metres later, this jumped on the end of my line:

My first ever Murray Cod! 49 cm and pretty annoyed at being caught. Also my first Yarra cod and the first fish caught from the canoe.

I kept going upstream after that for another 3/4 of an hour, but had no more bites. Not that I cared, I'm still stoked at getting a cod within stone's throw of my place.

So healthy these fish in our backyard! Me n a mate got one on the troll recently around eltham on a black n green spotted 100mm hardbody.

The Yarra definately can produce some quality fish! I went out yesterday morning the water was murky n barometer low as n sadly not a single hit on any lure
If I'm not fishing, I'd rather be fishing!

It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

They periodically get fishing gear in. It's pretty good for what you pay.
