Upper Yarra trouting

Post by happyfriggincamper » Tue May 23, 2017 8:19 pm

Headed out to the trout region of the Yarra on Saturday to throw some of my newly purchased cheap hardbodies hopefully in front of some hungry and or territorial trout.

On the drive up, decided to try some new water - wasn't sure how that would go cos I know from experience even in the upper reaches the Yarra can change from a fast flowing rocky stream to long deep silty sections which can be hard to fish - but perused new water anyway thinking it's better to know than to not know.

The stretch I decided to try started out rocky, but was too tight, snaggy and shallow for hb's so switched to some strike tiger nymph SP's in an effort to get first trout on a SP and it was first cast a reasonable size Yarra brown took it down and made it to hand.

First cast, first fish

Continued fishing towards the next exit point over a few hours with a number of drops, hits and follows - fish sighted were all in the 30 to 40 range which was a pleasant change in the yarra but had nothing else to hand unfortunately. Switched between various strike tiger nymphs, black and gold twister tails and hb's in the deeper water (only one donation made).

nice brown!

My trips to the plenty gorge and Heidelberg stretches of the yarra have been fruitless. The water quality in those areas were also quite bad.

Very nice fish and some beautiful stretches of river too... love to have a crack at that myself..

Good to see you did manage to catch a solid brown for the time you put into it, always a nice reward for effort...

If you want to try a hard body in shallow water try a F-3 Rapala in a rainbow or brown trout pattern..
always worth a shot at a trout with a floating lure in shallow water.
cheers

It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish

Hey Happycamper,

Great report! I'm planning a trip to the upper Yarra myself on Wednesday for a final fish before the end of the season.

I've never been fishing in this area so just going off google maps, was looking at reefton area is this where you went? Just trying to work out river access and where to park?

Hi Clintos - anywhere from Launching Place up to Reefton will hold trout - Warburton contains the most prominent populations in my experience along with ease of access.

There are a lot of access points due to the Yarra running right next to roads - literally anywhere you see likely points of access in satelite view - 95% of the time will be good access (Upper Yarra doesn't really present many steep bank obstacles that are commonly found through the middle suburban reaches) with parking on the side of the road.
