Yarra River Blackfish this afternoon

Post by ChrisD » Thu Feb 08, 2018 5:18 pm

quick session on the Yarra this afternoon, between Wesburn and Warburton, to my surprise it resulted in a couple of blackfish. Never caught them during the day.
First one was small, went across the plam of my hand and that was about it, didn't take a photo. The second was easily my PB on a blackfish, however as it was a hot afternoon, I got my photo and got it straight back into the water, didn't worry about measuring it.

Well done Chris.

You can catch them during the day 1. if the water is discoloured, 2. if fishing under cover such as logs of undercut banks, and 3. if the water is heavily shaded. I caught them about a week ago in a stream in the area you fished - I created a thread on it.

You should check out some of the small streams in the area you fish - its surprising what is in them ;-)

Best Wishes

Got amongst the Yarra Blackfish again tonight - had to battle through 8 small... between 15 and 20 cms....eels, but it was worth it.
One Blackfish around the 35cm mark. It surprised me with the account it gave, it had plenty of fight.
Unfortunately being on dark none of the photos I took turned out.
Got this one just upstream of Yarra Glen. Got me wondering just how far down river they are found??????
Might have to work down river bit by bit over the next couple of weeks and see what happens :)

Well done on the PB with the Blackfish, they're certainly not a pretty fish are they, good fighting fish.. I've caught the odd one when trout fishing a small stream here in Tassie but only in the same stream, never caught one anywhere else.. They are in all of the rivers down here and are mainly taken when bait fishing, they're very good at picking the hooks clean too.. Here's a photo of one I caught in a tannin stream back in 2008..

cheers
Adrian
