Moggs Creek boardwalk improves angler access
A new boardwalk has improved access to the beach for recreational fishers at Moggs Creek,
between Fairhaven and Eastern View on the Great Ocean Road.
Fisheries Victoria Executive Director, Travis Dowling, said the boardwalk was funded by the State
Government’s Target One Million plan for recreational fishing, which aims to get more people
fishing, more often.
“The stretch of water between Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club and Eastern View is popular with
surf anglers trying to catch gummy sharks, Australian salmon, mullet, trevally and elephant fish,”
Mr Dowling said.
“The 57 metre-long timber boardwalk provides safe and easy pedestrian access from the carpark
to the beach, between the sand dunes and Moggs Creek.”
“The Great Ocean Road Coast Committee managed the project, which was supported by the
Association of Geelong and District Angling Clubs, using a $62,000 grant from Target One Million’s
Better Fishing Facilities Fund.”
“Improving fishing opportunities is at the heart of the Target One Million plan, which is also
strengthening angling club membership, increasing fish stocking to five million, developing new
fisheries and halting all commercial net-fishing in Port Phillip Bay by 2020.”
Great Ocean Road Coast Committee Chief Executive Officer Richard Davies said the new
boardwalk improved access to the beach for people of all abilities.
“The project thoughtfully balanced environmental concerns by delaying construction to avoid
Hooded Plover breeding season last year. The project aims to reduce trampling of the dunes with
improved access for fishers and visitors.”
