NSW/Vic Good job Fisheries. Disgusting behaviour

Post by Brett » Sat Jan 27, 2018 5:53 pm

Six people could face thousands of dollars in fines after NSW DPI Fisheries officers conducted a covert operation along the Murray River, between Mathoura and Barmah.

Over the course of 5 days, fisheries officers spent the pre-dawn hours conducting surveillance on a number of people suspected of illegal fishing activities. #weneversleep

In separate incidents officers apprehended:

• A man from Echuca in possession of two very small Trout Cod, a threatened species. The man was also found fishing with excess lines.
• A man from Melbourne man in possession of a 54cm Murray Cod.
• Two men in possession of a 80cm Murray Cod and a 94cm Murray Cod. These two men were fishing together.
• A man found in possession of two Murray Cod measuring 97cm and 93cm and a woman in possession of an 85cm Murray Cod. These two were fishing together.

Fisheries officers seized the Trout Cod and returned them to the water alive. All of the Murray Cod were seized and three were successfully returned to the water alive. Unfortunately the remaining three could not be revived, despite lengthy efforts from fisheries officers.

Investigations into the incidents continue. #fineswithyourfish.

A bit of illegal fishing goes on along the stretch of water between Laanecoorie res and Newbridge in the form of overnight set lines for cod. I've also heard of gill netting of the little Bealiba res for Yellowbelly. Wish they'd catch them.

If they dont know about it, its hard to catch them. You or whoever told you should say something.

No good waiting for others to put these low lifes in.

The only reason I could think of them keeping the tiny trout cod would be for aquarium use? Surely not for eating, but then again, when in Rome...
