GETTING HOOKED ON FREE FISH EVENTS AT LAKES ENTRANCE

FEBRUARY 6, 2018

Seafood lovers and keen recreational anglers will soon converge at Lakes Entrance for the Labour Day long weekend in March to join the festivities at our free ‘Hooked on Lakes Entrance’ event and first ever symposium on dusky flathead.

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said last year’s inaugural ‘Hooked on Lakes Entrance’ event attracted more than 1,000 people, many of whom were expected to return again this year on Sunday 11 March between 10am and 4pm.

Lakes Entrance is a fishing mecca and home to one of Australia’s largest commercial fishing fleets.

Based at the Lakes Entrance Foreshore Reserve, the free event attractions will include:
• Seafood cooking demonstrations by Peruvian Alejendro Savaria, Sam Mahlook from Miriam’s Seafood Restaurant, Nick Mahlook from The Atlantic and Masterchef finalists Eliza Wilson and Sam Goodwin;
• Commercial fishers tied up to the wharf explaining their practises and life at sea;
• Fish filleting and fish preparation tips from experts, including Aaron Habgood;
• Cook-off with local personalities and chefs;
• Fishcare ‘Come and Try’ fishing clinics for children and families;
• Market stalls and food stands selling freshly cooked seafood and local produce;
• Kids amusements, tables and chairs to enjoy the waterfront views.

Symposium presenters will include Dr Paul Hamer on Victoria’s dusky flathead fishery and expert anglers like Kaj Busch (Bushy) who’ll provide helpful tips to improve your catch rate.

The symposium will be held on Saturday 10 March 2018, from 9.30am – 3.00pm at Bellevue on the Lakes, 201 Esplanade, Lakes Entrance.

Lunch will be provided along with tea and coffee at the symposium. Learn more about the day, and register for free, at www.vfa.vic.gov.au/duskysymposium

Quotes attributable to Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing:

“This is yet another magnificent opportunity to showcase our high quality seafood caught right across Gippsland and gives the whole family a chance to wet a line.”

“The free symposium will be of particular interest to keen saltwater anglers and is being funded by the Andrews Labor Government’s Target One Million plan, which is investing a record $46 million to get more people fishing, more often.”
