Natives relocation

VFA

We’re teaming up with Goulburn-Murray Water this month and next to relocate Murray cod, golden perch and silver perch from the East Goulburn main irrigation channel!

The valuable natives have shown they can adapt to life in the channels, but can be at risk when GMW conducts essential channel maintenance work.

It’s not the first time we’ve joined forces with GMW to look after our iconic native fish. In 2017, a similar relocation exercise was successful in catching and releasing hundreds, including some very big cod.

Electro-fishing is a safe and efficient way to catch these fish for relocation. They are netted, placed into a holding tank then transported in specialised Fisheries trucks to their new digs.

Northern waterways such as Lake Benalla, Broken Creek at Nathalia and Victoria Park Lake in Shepparton will provide new homes for the fish and boost local populations in spots that are accessible to recreational fishers.
