4liters wrote:So just say you found the sand and there weren’t any good flatties do you decided to chase reefies??

We did find the sand out on flinders bank and only caught a few under sized flathead and a few size ones

We drifted on the sand for about 45 mins and a few factors we changed to chase reefies

Haha this is going downhill fast.

So i did have a taste of some curried parrot fish
Verdict - 4/10 rating. Still eatable but maybe next time only a few will go back home if we catch this many
Still yet to prepare it a different way so will let you guys know about that as well.

Smiley. Dint think crumpet was having a go. Just pointing out that we missed the sand near mushroom reef.
Flinders bank is a bit further away which we went to and certainly found the flathead which is a dead giveaway of sand banks. But all of them were undersized or just size.
So we decided to move and target reefies mainly for the fun factor.
Next time we will try where crumpet has mentioned.

Well done lads - great haul.

The only way to know Steve is to try it & at 4/10, you’re better off eating bream

One of the strategies I have found is when the flatties are small head further deeper by another a 5mtrs, or put a burley pot down. About half of our catch was undersized and went back, anything not more than 5cm over legal went back as we were getting them within a few seconds of the bait hitting the ground. Squid strips worked very well

Wrasse fall apart if you grill/fry them; however, they are one of, if not the, best fish steamed, Korean style. Totally different level...

That 4/10 seems rather generous lmao just the look of the fish to me makes it a 0/10 instantly. Gross big scaled yucky things they are.

I dont knock you for keeping so many though, they have a pretty low survival rate I think

I throw them back all the time, and after seeing how crazy some people are over steamed wrasse, I might give them a go.

I am a big believer that we should be eating fish further down the food chain to increase sustainability. Recently I tried Yakka as sashimi, that wasnt too bad tbh, will be trying to expand my horizons with this kind of thing. As an aside, anyone that hasnt tried garfish or leatherjackets needs too ASAP. They are two of my favourite fish these days.
