Re: Kingfish Search 2017
Since on the subject, what is the preferred setup for chasing kingfish?
I have a Penn Spinfisher 10-15kg rated spinning rod & Penn 750SSM reel, which would be the only spinning rod/reel perhaps capable. The 750SSM however only takes 360m of 50lbs braid, which may not be enough for kingies?!!?
I do have my overhead tuna rods, but I dont think you'd use them for this right?

Exciting times can't wait to read of your captures and hopefully share my own. Purchased a few lures from the boys at fishing fever today the boys were helpful with a few tips on where to start with rigs, lures, techniques and what to look for.

Re: Kingfish Search 2017
Dunno if I'll get as far as Portland this season. Wilson's Prom looks fishy as **** so I might give it another bash once the weather warms up, otherwise off Cape Woolamai will be my main place to target them.
I have a 10-15kg Crucis Hoodlum with a Quantum Cabo 50 spooled with about 200m of 22kg WFT Strongline. So far I've only hooked a wormy old couta on it but it monstered that, looking forward to hooking something with a bit ore grunt to give it a proper workout.ChrisAbout wrote:Since on the subject, what is the preferred setup for chasing kingfish?

Re: Kingfish Search 2017
You want line strength over length for kings, they generally only go up and down (straight for reef) so 150-200m of line is plenty.
I've landed fish up to 1m on 15lb braid with 30lb leader and a PE 1-3 rod though, so depending on how confident you are in your knots and your tackle, much can be accomplished with lighter gear.
