Is 5 Kingfish at 60cm per person per day to many ?

Post by hornet » Tue Jan 24, 2017 1:31 pm

Do we want to lose this fishery as we once did many years ago through over fishing ?
Limit is 5 a day per angler minimum size 60cm that's a lot of flesh.
Do we need a limit such as our Bluefin have ? 1 per day / angler
Is 1 kingfish per angler at 60cm enough for a feed ?
A charter boat with 4 anglers can legally catch 20 kingies per day... excessive ?

Depends if 5 fish per person is going to deplete the fishery imo. As I understand it, it was commercial fishing using kingfish traps that depleted it originally, not recreational fishing.
2015/16 Fisting Victoria Species comp total: 289cm
Brown Trout: 37cm
Flathead: 51cm; Squid: 36cm; Australian Salmon: 51cm; Snapper 46cm; Silver Trevally 23cm; KGW: 45cm

yes thats what i heard as well, commercial netting between vic and nsw is what stopped the numbers travelling down from nsw. now that lots of the netting has been stopped i reckon we will see more fish come or way.

but yeah maybe 5 would be ok if it was fishing like NSW where kingfish are quite common.

2 is plenty.
Not only do we want to ensure survival of the fishery we want to grow it to it's full potential.
Catch and release as much as possible should be encouraged also.

I am no expert on the Kingfish but after seeing all the recent posts in the PB Facebook page of people showing their catches at the RIP... I thought to myself how quickly do those catch rates deplete stocks......

In my opinion, no matter what species, anymore than a feed for that night and the next is taking more than you need.
