Using squid as bait.

...........................................I would just use a kl 1, 0 circle and cut the tentacles wings etc into strips lightly mash it I carry a meat tenderizer for the job. I also put a tentacle on a jig head its the ultimate soft plastic.

Noticed these this morning in Aussie Angler so grabbed them. The larger 3/0 ones as well to try back home on the cod in the channel. They look a lot better than the Owner wide gape circle hooks I use.
'Mashing' the squid...helps by releasing more juice/scent into the water? I'm guessing you don't have to tenderise it to get the hook into it?
The 'tentacle plastic' techique sounds good!

Mashing is mainly for whiting, as I've heard that they like softer baits. However I often forget to mash, and still get bites

Squid needs to be fresh.

Whilst it is tough it degrades quickly in the water.

If the fishing is slow, change it every 15-20 minutes.

I've struggled to catch much on squid, I usually buy one from the local fishmonger before each trip but banana prawns always seem more popular with the fish.
