Slimy mackerel

Post by Freshfishin » Wed Jan 07, 2015 7:44 am

I'm thinking of buying a Jarvis walker sabiki rod for jigging bait jigs and was wondering what sort of fish would take slimy mackerel?
What other bait fish might I catch with a bait jig?
Most of my fishing is fresh water but I want to do more salt water fishing off Portland

Was using a sabiki yesterday in WPB. Just left it in the holder while whiting fishing, and got quite a few scad. Some of them were quite a good size, around the 35cm mark.

Out in PPB you catch millions of small flatties with the odd good one thrown in from my experience. One time I had 5 flatties on at once, only one was a keeper though.

I just use a whiting rod, as long as you keep the rig tight when you bring it in, its not too hard to keep it from tangling. Might pay to see if you like using them before investing in a rod just to use them.

On the sabiki, you can catch bay trout, slimies, yakkas, pinkies, etc.

Slimy mackeral are a good bait cause they are full of blood.

Need to bait up the hooks to work effectively

Would you fish them live or butterfly them?

It is actually illegal to bait up bait jigs as they are no longer considered a bait jig, rather a baited hook (maximum of 2 per line in victoria)
PB- Snapper 55cm, Whiting 38cm, Flathead 55cm, Bream 38cm, Australian Salmon 55cm, Carp 80cm

I always presumed that meant you could bait up 2 of the hooks and be fine.

I have heard a lot of people think this, and it seems that its a common misconception.

The DEPI states;

Bait jig: Up to 6 unbaited lures with hooks less than 2 cm in length, attached to a line with a total rig length of up to 3 m.

Thats just my interperetation anyhow. They seem to work ok without bait anyhow.
