Cut 4 off if you bait them as you can only have 2 baited hooks

Interesting thread...

I'm interested in targeting slimeys / yakkas / horse mackerel around Newhaven/San Remo and also out towards the eastern entrance around Cape Woolamai.

I'll be in a kayak, so won't be venturing out to the 60m mark or anything crazy like that!

Are there any locations that are better than others?

If I anchor up, do I need to berley? What would be the best depth to have the jigs hanging?

Never done it before, so any tips would be appreciated!

Cheers,

Mike.

Mike we were doing a bit a a shark night off Balnaring Sat night with the Yaks I had a berley bucket out with some old Saurys and some Slimy chunks in it
this was about a meter or so off the bottom
While my three big rods were out I also had a light bait rod out and apart from a few Pinkys I pulled 4 good cowenyoung to 36 cm
these were all on bait but they weren't fussy taking Prawn and slimmy pieces

Normally Yakkas aren't hard to find around Reef Island to dickeys bay - I just scrunch up an old pilly or saury in the water by hand and let the crumbs float down through the current

Our trip to SWRs I could take a trick on sabiki rigs but had no trouble getting ether Slimmies or yakka on a 2 hook paternoter using no 10 long shank and baited with small pieces of mack tuna
of cause keeping the slimmies alive was harder - a bait tube isn't the best , I have to make a live bait tank for the yak before next years trip north
My kayak PBs
Gummy shark 128 Cm - Elephant fish 85 Cm - Snapper 91 Cm - KG Whiting 49 Cm - Flathead 55 Cm - Garfish 47 Cm - Silver Trevally 40 Cm - Long Tail Tuna 86 Cm - snook 64 Cm - Couta 71 Cm - Sth Calamari 44 Cm hood - Cobia 117 cm

Complete waste of money buying a rod to sabiki with, just use any 7 footer less than about 6kg.

People seem to have a lot of success with those off boats through WP in particular.

Slimey mackerel are like licorice to fish, live bait I don't think that there is a better fish.
As for the sabiki rig a lot of people don't realise it is illegal to put bait on them but if you buy good quality ones and work them lift and drop no problems

Just an aside, I got 15 Slimeys on Saturday, about 50:50 between the sabiki and a 2 hook paternoster rig, with sz6 long shanks. I got a Slimey/Pike double header on the paternoster at one point lol. This is out off Hastings.

Any thoughts on fishing for them land based? specifically from a WP rock ledge?
