Mantis shrimp?
Hey everyone, just seen that Seaford baits has brought out a range of mantis shrimp. Just wondering thoughts and if anyone’s ever used them before for fishing. Personal haven’t tried them as bait, heard maybe good for gummies but seen mostly crayfish, crabs in their stomachs so bit unsure on that statement. Anyways great weather for a fish, if only I didn’t have to work. Hope someone out there is enjoying it and tight lines!

Re: Mantis shrimp?
I have accidentally pumped a few little ones while collecting nippers. I used them live and they caught whiting, trevally, and probably some other things I can't remember. The mantis shrimp were only about 2 inches long though.

Re: Mantis shrimp?
Many kayak fishos that frequent the shallows of wpb have been using mantis shrimp (2nd best to prawns) for gummies with good results ever since fisheries urged victorians to stop using food grade prawns for bait due to fear of a white spot disease outbreak

Re: Mantis shrimp?
Might have to give them a crack and see how they go. A tackle shop is raving about them for gummies but of course they want to sell bait to make some cash so you never know how thruthful they can be.

Re: Mantis shrimp?
Almost everything sold in a tackle shop or servo is actually food grade, from the exact same sources as the fish mongers in most cases. It loses that food grading due to transport not having prime safe accreditation and the handling not to food safety standards. And in some cases the fish/crustacean hasn't been 'thawed for convenience' making them better quality if you don't use that item straight away. As for price, gotta cover the packaging and labor costs, but then again at times it can work out cheaper given the supply/demand fluctuations at both wholesale and retail level.cheaterparts wrote:as Tim said many kayakers have been using then for some time -- check your pricing we were getting them from the Springvale market these food grade Mantis shrimp may work out cheaperA-a-ron wrote:Might have to give them a crack and see how they go. These shrimp are mostly from the same areas, prawn trawling bycatch in the northern half of the country

Yea maybe so, but don’t know it I’d ever try eat a dirty servo prawn or something hahaha do understand the add on cost they’ve gotta put on to cover themselves. Cheers for the info mate :a_goodjob:cobby wrote:Almost everything sold in a tackle shop or servo is actually food grade, from the exact same sources as the fish mongers in most cases. Re: Mantis shrimp?
Having presumably worked with bait a fair bit do you have any idea what the difference is between the Australian sourced banana prawns and the puny little bait prawns you get from the tackle shops (apart from the size)? I could never work out the logic between giving 'bait' prawns the ok for use for fishing but asking people not to use food grade prawns.cobby wrote:Almost everything sold in a tackle shop or servo is actually food grade, from the exact same sources as the fish mongers in most cases. Re: Mantis shrimp?
Was given a price from a tackle shop $9.99 for roughly 15 per packet. For anyone who’s following the post. Seems like a pretty fair price.
