First time trip to Port Phillip

Post by scott__henning » Wed Sep 23, 2015 9:40 pm

Hi guys,

Being from Traralgon, I usually fish either Welshpool or westernport, but with a few weeks left of some well earned time, and after fishing at Apollo Bay, Westernport, Welshpool, Blue Rock, Bemm River and Eden; I figure I might as well have my first crack at PPB as well.

Having a look, I'm thinking of launching at Patterson Lakes as I have seen that ramp before and know it's quite good.

My question is, seeing as though it's my first time fishing the area, what am I likely to find this time of year? Are there plenty of pinkies around yet or are they still hard to find? I'm thinking of trying a variety of micro jigs and soft plastics, will probably take some bait as well.

I've had a good look at navionics and have plenty of spots to try but I'm just not sure if I'm giving this a crack to early or not.

Thanks in advance

Water temp is very cold for this time of year (currently around 12.5-13 deg) and fish activity on average has been low.

There is unlikely to be any new season snapper in the bay yet.

Typically snapper are not around in numbers until the water temp is 16 deg C at least 14 deg which this year is probably not going to be until mid to late October.

But then again there was Blue Fin in WPB and barrells caught recently so snapper might be caught in the yarra...

Fish the shallow reefs areas e.g - 4 to 9m of water, for Snapper early in the season.

I will be giving the boat a run this weekend, odds of a red are low but you never know. Worst case collect some bait and a feed of flatties.
