My first time fishing docklands

Post by Broomstick » Thu Jul 17, 2014 9:22 pm

Hi guys,
So as the title suggests, I fished docklands for the first time earlier in the week. After seeing so many pictures of amazing fish pulled from the docks (massive mulloway, monster reds and big blue nose bream) it has always held a certain mystique for me, but I have always been hesitant to give it a crack due to its reputation of holding the finickiest fish in Australia. I also wasn't that keen on fishing a filthy waterway in the middle of the city, but I had a physio appointment just down the road so I decided it was time to give it a crack. Well my first impressions of the place weren't the best: the floating rubbish, heavy construction and constant traffic were a far cry from the secluded creek I had fished on the weekend. I didn't really know where to start so I decided to fish where all the rubbish was congregating, based on the logic that all the food and therefore fish would be congregating here too.

To be honest it was pretty gross, but I was determined to give it a proper go. I experimented with a bunch of lures - blades, vibes, crabs - without a touch, and was starting to think I was wasting my time. It's so deep at the docks I initially struggled to get to the bottom even though there is absolutely no current, so I tied on an extra long leader (5m+) thinking the bouyancy of the braid was preventing my super light lures from getting to the bottom. I decided I'd give one last lure a crack - the trusty wriggler (smothered in sax cent). And sure enough, I started getting bites straight away:

Then I caught something that felt a little different:

And the piece de resistance:

So it turned out to be a pretty awesome little session. And I think I'm a docks convert :). I've got another appointment in the city tomorrow, so I'll give it another crack and try and prove it wasn't a fluke

nice one mate! Being someone that grew up in the hills and always fished out of a boat towards the southern end of the bay, I hate going to the city, let alone to go fishing. It always boggles my mind seing people pulling quality fish out of there. well done.

May the holes in your net be no larger than the fish in it.

God damn it sloth! I'll get down there sometime soon.

Are there certain conditions to look for or is it a case of show up and cast?

Also would you be so good as to recommend a couple of different plastics, I have some Zman grubs and some pre rigged squidgee paddle tails.
