Fish ID Please

Post by sarsi » Tue Mar 10, 2015 8:46 am

My friend and I could not agree on what fish this is as it's the first time we've caught one. He originally thought it's a mulloway but looking at the Vic Fishing Guide, mulloway's tail is fan shaped and it's anal fins look very different. I was thinking it's a tailor but then its head doesn't look like the tailor shown in the fishing guide. Thanks for your help :)

Thanks hornet and ncr1. The illustration of the pike in the guide also shows a different anal fin but some photos of long-finned pike on the internet look exactly the same. This fish jumps out of the water, if that is some indication.

Can't tell from the photo but if tail is yellow it's most probably a long finned or yellow tailed pike, hope that helps.

Snook, also called short-finned pike, are quite different in appearance from the long-finned pike when you put them side by side. Apart from the difference in fins (long vs short), snook are much longer and leaner than pike. Snook also have more of a fork in the tail than pike. I'm sure there are other identifying features, but this is just a couple.

Snook ( short finned pike ) are better eating but both are good shark and snapper bait

I have always found the easiest way to tell apart is the length of the anal fin one is short one is long
