ID and any good eating?

Post by kaotay » Fri Oct 10, 2014 6:49 pm

Fished Station pier today, 3 hrs with no touches then as we packed up my friend's rod pulled up heavy. Thought it was a snag until it started moving, after a few minutes of heavy lifting (dead weight about 20kg) we got this up on the pier.
Thought it was a shovelnose shark at first, no barb or thorns on it but maybe its a skate? We kept the flaps, anyone know if its good eating?

Great eating to my knowledge. Never tried em myself but my boss loves em ! Reckons they taste like flake. Check for worms though.

Just looked it up, nude up you are right - aka Melbourne Skate. Planned to freeze it for a week (I do this for all shark/ray to get rid of ammonia), presume this is no different?
There were no worms in the fillets.

Yep tastes like flake however the flesh is stringy compared to flake, still tastes great... I've never come across one with worms ?..

Yeah it's a bit dissapointing I I've caught one or two with worms sort of growing out the top of them. Makes you unsure whether to keep them or not. If you ever catch a banjo also have a look they're almost defiantly gonna have them
