caught this out of the river at bright. not 100% sure what it is but I think it's a river blackfish

Not an expert but certainly looks like River Blackfish to me. From what I understand, very much on the decline over the past 10 years or so.

Agree with you both it fits the description. I haven't seen one with such a dark pattern. And it looks like it's in great condition which is good to see.

Yeap 100% a blackfish - well done. They are an unusual little fish, and can be hard to find being generally nocturnal.
Unweighted worms, in the Yarra and tributaries, up past Yarra Glen can bring some success.
Not a huge fighting fish, but one worth hunting up for the challenge alone
