There was a time when 'couta' rivaled (& indeed surpassed) the good ol' 'flake' with regard to the amount eaten.
Dedicated fleets of 'couta boats' would head out from places like Queenscliff to troll under sail, for schools of 'couta' to feed those Melburnians hungry for a feed of fish.

With time & technology the ability to catch more & better species meant that the ol' couta has been relegated to the 'poor eating' status it holds today. The smaller ones are ok if eaten fresh (the flesh doesn;t freeze well). Couta fillets are also pretty good snapper/gummy bait. Some dedicated artisans have kept the fleets of couta boats alive & in fact there's quite an active movement involved in restoring & racing these most beautiful & graceful of water craft.
