Not quite sure??

My first thought was a gurnard, but not sure and what better place to ask hey?
Caught off Red Point , Cape Woolamai.

It appears to be some (unusual) species of flathead ... but no idea which one!

Looks like a type of gurnard/latchet fish but I have not seen one like that before usually big eye or butterfly

So it is - I've never heard of these. The one you linked to, Brett is a NZ variety, apparently. Maybe it is this species, listed as being in Port Phillip Bay? (The Dragonet or Bovichtus angustifrons)

Amazing I have fished around here since 1982 and never seen or heard of one fishing is an amazing thing

Weird, black colours don't really resemble any commonly-caught fish. Its physique displays the attributes of a flathead, though.
