Hi just hoping someone can tell me what this is and if you can eat it caught it in mornington

I am sure this question will cause a stir. Some will say - why kill it when you are not sure it can be eaten? Before firing those comments, let's be realistic. How many fish do we know are poisonous? I am not sure what this is but if it is not a toadie, I will eat it. How big this is? Looks like a nice fish. Nice work.

Thanks speared it this morning
is about 40-45 cm not a toady so thought i would try it would be good to know what I'm eating though

If you're not sure what species it is it may be best to take a photo and put it back.

I know it may not be poisonous but what if it were a protected species?

looks like a rock cale..(which taste like shite), but I`m probably wrong...

May be a kelp fish, pretty common around the bay, might be a bit big for one though.
