The picture from Flathead looks like it maybe a "Roughie", definatly not a type of rock cod.
The other two pics are definatly one of many other species of rock cod. Cheers , happy new year . Nice fish too !

Re: whats this fish
Seriously, fish-cadors pics , we used to catch these all the time over 20 years ago, and were always refered to as a species of coral/rock cod by fishing charter boats and magazines and all. Get a 20 years + old mag and you will see heaps of these fish refered to as coral cod or rock cod. Although they do seem to refered of as a 'Cale' these days, there is links to them as rock cod because there is so many species of them.Brett wrote:If any of the fish above are listed as rock cod, I'll shave me eyebrows
Not saying i'm a know all at all, i just remember the look of them like the back of my hand , many species of them , all look similar with the spots and shape of the fish. Not to be confused with the larger groper family of rock cod, here's a page with some smaller species of coral/rock cod http://www.australianfish.com.au/report ... -reef.html
The top fish is just a guess from what i remember from years back though too , looked fimiiar and havent seen one in years , but struck me as sure it was called a 'Roughie' ? . Cheers

Re: whats this fish
Your link refers to fish from QLD, the waters of QLD are no where near as cool/cold as those in Vic. That being said, we don't get the same sort of fish in Vic. Might get similar, but the above fish, in the previous 30+ yrs of my fishing experience have never been known as rock cod, in Vic.
