Fish ID; What could it have been?
Re: Fish ID; What could it have been?

Could be. Just shocked it wouldtake a unweighted bait that size. Was meant for snapper, not rays and flathead, other bottom lurkers.
Rogue giant ray?

I reckon it was an Eagle Ray.
I got one on once when out on a charter with Gwayne Blake and he said they are even considered a sport fish now due to their performance.

Re: Fish ID; What could it have been?ti
That's what I thought but other times I have caught them on 20lb near the bottom. Just really odd. Didn't see anything and we had 5meters visibility. Hum.
I sounded behind the boat for a while finding no rocks.
Anstill. I don't think it was either shark or ray.
A.) Didn't see it
B.) Didn't cut line instantly
Like could have wrapped around a snapper and cut in the gills?

Re: Fish ID; What could it have been?
For now ill stick to big snapper, the line hitting its gill razor..makes me feel better about being in the water
No toothy shark or tail stabbing ray.

A snapper wont take 200m with a bit of drag.

Stingrays tend to just head for the Horizon, Not many changes of Direction. They arent all that keen on a Big Bait, as they have fairly small mouths in comparison to size.
I still think Thresher, or possibly a Schoolie. I've been picking them up in WP in 5m of water the last month.
I reckon I land 1 per 10 hook ups though.
