After googlin the supect species I'm quite sure it's one of these 'Loach' fish.
Should they be killed upon capture or released??

definitely not released alive, theyre on the noxious list along with carp! I guess it is kind of cruel to kill fish for no good reason though, but I'm sure they would make good fertilizer for the garden at least

i actually caught one of these near the westgate in the boat last friday night took a whole salmon fillet wondered what it was

That's interesting Nick, I thought weatherloaches were freshwater. Perhaps it has high tolerance to salt?

The one you got would have been a ling. I have caught a few of the fishing from the rocks under the westgate. You get a lot of the in western port as well.

great fish to eat their got a big one off webb dock and it was so good to eat flesh was flake looking a nice white
