It didnt have any fins though? And it's eyes were on top of its head.

Was found in Phillip island btw in very shallow rockpools

If you want a great ID book have a look at Australian marine life by Graham Edgar.
Mine is in storage atm but i am sure that critter is described in that book

looks like a snake blenny to me. The shots make it hard to work out if they are the same species in both pics?
