Re: When Flatty Tails aren't Flatty Tails
I've see those vans on the side of Stud rd and wondered about pulling in to have look. Won't now. Someone mentioned Dandenong market; I too have had some questions about what they are selling at times and the names they give things as well as been ripped off on mussels there more than once however there is a new fish mongers at the market there (just up around the corner from the other 2) that seems to have very fresh, local seafood. They are friendly and speak English well too which can help when you want to do more than just point and pay.
On the actual topic too, I once ordered flatty tails from the Co-Op fish and chip shop in San Remo and what I received (after paying a premium) was most certainly not flatty either. I spoke to a local about it and they told me than none of the fish served cooked there is local and no one local goes there, it's just a tourist trap. I think it is likely a common scenario when ordering fish cooked or fresh fillets, if you don't question it at the point of sale then many people wouldn't know the difference once eating it and it would be pretty hard to prove either way. I think this was highlighted by a TV presenter not that long ago when he took samples from a few people claiming to sell "gummy shark flake". From memory, less than half were true.

There really should be better regulation of seafood, maybe narrow the names for each species down to just one for each particular type too. More checking up and DNA testing to ensure retailers are sticking to the rules would be nice, it wasn't long ago some place on the peninsula got busted flogging basa as flake

They are definitely NOT flattie tails. As some of the guys said, flattie tails have silver skin are thinner looks like some sort of gurnard fillets !!

Flathead don't always have the silver skin remaining, it depends on how they are skinned.

Re: When Flatty Tails aren't Flatty Tails
If you buy whole flathead from Victoria market it's much cheaper than the already prepared by the monger fillets.
It doesn't take long to clean and you save heaps.
Same for whiting..

Agree, plus they look really wide for a flathead fillet.frozenpod wrote:Flathead don't always have the silver skin remaining, it depends on how they are skinned.
