Squid calamari fridge

Post by Labido » Wed Feb 07, 2018 6:03 pm

Hi everyone,

Im labido and new to this site.

I was hoping for some solid advice regarding squid / calamari.

I have just recently started fishing and caught myself a few calamari a few nights ago.
My question is;

How long can I keep the fresh calamari in the fridge for ?

Also, i have currently had the calamari in the fridge for 2 days, how much longer can i keep it in the fridge before i must freeze it, or cant i freeze it after being in the fridge for 2 days ?

Bascially, what are the fridge and freezer recomendations ?

Lastly, how do i know if the calamari has gone off ?

I look forward to your responses.

Regards
Labido

With Calamari or Fish I usually go by the rule of 2 or 3 days at most in fridge before freeze or consumption and never had a problem.

Try soaking your calamari rings in milk overnight then cook them up the next day, much more tender.

If you ice fish/squid when caught and look after it, should be fine for 7 days in fridge. If you are going to freeze it, do within 4 days which allows for defrosting time. Never wash fish/squid in fresh water. Turns it to mush. It's all about what you do after you have caught your fish.

Ill say 2 to 3 days for a normal person.
If you have a iron stomach 4 to 5 days.

im not sure what you mean when you say dont clean with freash water.

Do you mean dont clean with fresh water full stop, or dont wash with freshwater when freezing.

Also, can i clean the squid before freezing ?

Best thing is to avoid putting it in the fridge altogether and simply dry it. We have the perfect climate for it, hot, low humidity and so on

I fish out of crib point and always clean them at the cleaning tables with the rest of my catch there with fresh tap water and never had a issue.
and then when i freeze them i just drain the water off then amd put then in a frezer bad, take as much air out as possible and seal and put in freezer.
Seems to last 4 or so months so far

You say "simply" dry it, but I suspect there is more to it than that. I've had a quick google and didn't find much - could you please link some relevant material, I'm really keen on this idea. Cheers.

Buy a vac sealer, seriously, it will change your life. If you arent eating within 24hrs, just vac seal it down, and it will defrost in 3 months like its just been caught. Even my GF who doesnt fish reckons she cant live without one these days.
