Surf Fishing - July 2014

Post by Ecka » Sat Aug 02, 2014 12:03 am

Heey there members,
has anyone been surf fishing down south east over the last few weeks? It's been way to :cold: for me.

Have a quick question which I'm guessing is going to take a while to get answers.

I would like to start to target Mulloway from the surf...what are the best areas around Victoria?
Is it true that these fish are very wary of tight lines? if so what type of rig would suffice? Mono or Braid? Tactics required? type of bait required? weather conditions?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated..I don't expect all your secrets but 99% will do me just fine!!I'm gonna get me one of these fish... :r

Cheers,
Ecka

Geoff Wilson's book Bream, Flathead and Mulloway and how to catch them is not a bad read for starters and I wish you all the best for catching a mulloway from the surf. It normally takes many hours and trips to catch one from the surf with a fair number of donut trips if you are fishing for them specifically

As i understand surf fishing for mulloway is a pretty tough gig around Melbourne.

Plenty of sambo's around at the moment though :)

Have a look at Raff's beach as well as Ocean Grove , freshest bait you can get and fish the rising tide . !3th Beach as well as Jan Juc are other options fihs with the freshest Squid that you can get though the majority of the action will be in the form of Gummies and Snapper as well as the ever present salmon.

Hey JS,

Interested in Raff's beach. Any advice on the depth of the place? I've been there quite a few times and while I do well in the river, haven't managed to crack the beach yet. Salmon are my normal target, but i'm quite happy to put bigger baits out as well.

I guess it's just a case of fresh bait and right time and place?

Ive been reading/researching alot about Raffs and surrounding beaches Jan Juc etc to get a gist of tides, baits etc as I have been interested for sometime in trying these beaches. There are alot of good older articles and posts ect regarding that whole coastline.
Weather and opportunity aligning im hoping to give it a crack for some bigger stuff soon myself.

I spend quite a bit of time down that way. Is there a night that's better for you?
