What Mazman said. I use 14lb leader for salmon and a very simple uni uni knot which will work fine providing the knot is outside the guides. Not sure a catana would hold up too well with 30lb line under a bit of strain though as they are only rated to 8kg. Might be worth looking at something slightly heavier

Does anyone know the difference between the Shimano rods? Is the pen combo any good, and last does the Wilson rod come in a two piece?

penn is rather heavy and not ideal for spinning. the three best options for a 9ft shimano imo are the catana (entry level) or if your looking to spend a bit more an impact nano xt and then the tcurve's which are also slightly heavier.
