Poppers work well. Blue always out-fished red for me.

Chuck a bigger bait out (squid/salmon strip) on a 6/0 and you might get lucky with a gummy. Don't know how well rye fishes for them, but it wont hurt to try

Put two rods out. One paternoster n one running sinker. Put a big hook n bait on the running, good chance of a gummy. Never know. In my experience, the salmon go quiet after dark. Bigger fish maybe scare them off.

I have heard of tales of squid, of the smaller variety, being at rye pier. I am yet to catch one of these mystical creatures from that location.

Go a bit further to BlairG, Sorrento or portsea for squid. I don't know the reef structure of rye pier. Salmon everywhere atm, just throw a bait out n wait. You win some, you lose some.
