Surf rod setup

Post by Kung Fugu » Fri Mar 27, 2015 5:20 pm

Hey guys,

I've borrowed a 12ft rod off a mate that I want to have a go with. It needs some line so I'm going to put on some 20lb mono that I already have. I bought some cheap 40lb leader the other day and I'm not sure about the rig. Do I still want to be using the 40lb line or should I attach something less obvious at the end like the 16lb fc I have?

Does this sound about right? -

Main line(20lb mono) - slim beauty or uni to uni knot - leader(40lb mono) about 2 rod lengths - snap swivel - paternoster rig using the 40lb line or using 16lb fc.

Am I right in thinking that using that 16lb fc will just be a weak link in the chain?

Not sure exactly what I'll be fishing for, might be whiting off some rocks or the beach.

Thanks :-D

wouldn't bother with the leader. just run the 20lb to the swivel and 16lb 'noster for whiting. 40lb if you're after bigger fish

Using mono, just run your 20lb mainline, to the swivel and connect the paternosta to it also. If chasing whiting, 16lb should be fine. If you hit a beach for gummies, then use the 40lb.

Ok, thanks. I thought i might fling a few sinkers off without the heavier line.
