Kilcunda 27/07

Headed down to Kilcunda Frid night before high tide around 7pm. A full moon and pretty good conditions wind wise were in my favour , or they were in my mind at least! I was thinking of going 1 more park up to Cemetery beach but that #*&^! sand dune on the way back brought back memories lugging gear back up the hill in the dark, hands full and promising never to do it again. Left it for another night.
I pulled into the 2nd car park with the toilet block and had a couple of 12ft rods in the surf in short order targeting Gummies (now officially on my most wanted list btw). I was using banana prawns and chicken necks roughly marinated in tinned sardines. I had a running rig as well as paternoster with #8 circle hooks. I had heard that prawns are gobbled up by Gummies so I was optimistic. But the fish had other ideas (or a meeting to go to) as I didn’t get a single bite. A couple of guys further up the beach had 4 rods going but nothing doing with them either. As the big man once said “I’ll be back” . It was still a great session … funny that.

Chasing gummies from the surf is something I enjoy too mate.
Hopefully next time you will get onto a good one.

That walk from the cemetery to the beach in waders nearly killed me. Have you tried the mouth of the powlett river

After a couple of walks up that track lugging rods, Eski, bucket and backpack I swore to travel light. Not easy when surf fishing for me anyway.
I haven’t tried powlett surf yet, mostly up river.
I’m learning what’s essential and what’s optional. trial and lots of error but getting there slowly.
I was caught in a gale walking back from the mouth back to the car park a few months back, was leaning 30deg into the wind getting pelted with hail (happy days). Mouth is still blocked I think, crappy results last time I visited. They need a webcam installed so I can see what’s up before heading down.

Yea it didn’t take me long to work out that travelling light is the best option when Fishing some of these locations :rofl:

Some fishing locations that are shared with Surfers (like Gunnamatta) can benefit from webcams that are set up to show real-time footage for the surfing folk.

Surf fishing is the most unproductive form of fishing I've found but also the most rewarding when you do eventually get that big run.

I invested in a trolley from beachwheelsaustralia.com
Pricey, but the balloon wheels are fantastic, they make carting important stuff like an esky full of beer so much easier.
