Surf rod and reel combo spin
Surf rod and reel combo spin
Hi all you surf fisher men and fisher ladies out there. I'm trying to find the ideal spin combo for the surf I've been told I need a 9-10 ft rod with a 4000 reel since there are many of these combos out there I'm finding it hard to decide on a combo with a budget of around 150 smackers could someone point me in the right direction. Can't seem to find a Shimano jewel any where but been recommended the Shimano Sienna 4000 reel pls help.
Cheers Dicky

Hi Dicky,
I've seen these in a few shops, they look and feel great, worth a look I think.

Re: Surf rod and reel combo spin
If you are looking to spin on the surf for salmon (i.e throw pieces of 40 - 60 grams of metal slugs) then we all generally use a 9 foot rod with a 4000 sized reel, 10 - 15 lb braid. The most popular / value for money combo is the Shimano Catana 902 shorespin with the Shimano Soltance 4000 reel - On special you can get them at BCF / Rays for 99 bucks.
If you are planning to bait soak then it will range from a 9 foot to 13 foot rod and the reel size 4000 upwards depending on what you are chasing and size of the sinker you want to cast out. My general bait soaker is a 12 foot rod with a 6000 sized reel, 20lb braid. Haven't used this in a while since i started spinning a couple of years back.

Awesome help already guys I've got a 12ft rod for soaking bait already. I've seen the at Cantana 902 about but couldn't find any reviews. In regards to the reel I need something that will handle 300 m of braid is that correct.

Re: Surf rod and reel combo spin
On my shimano reel i have about 220 metres of 15lb braid on it, no mono backing, straight onto the reel. If you went downwards in strength you would get more on the reel. Unless you are a pro caster like some of the guys on the site which can cast up to 220 metres +, depending on wind conditions you should be able to get between a 60 - 110 metre cast in.Dick83 wrote:Awesome help already guys I've got a 12ft rod for soaking bait already. Re: Surf rod and reel combo spin
Ive got some cheapo 5-10kg 12ft Jarvis walker royale gold rod with a shimano hyperloop 6000 reel, no complaints so far only used once casts the 35gram salmon slugs well.
Now im Thinking of getting a Catana combo after looking at them at rays, nice looking and feeling rods.
Edit- Got a Catana/Solstace combo with 15lb power pro, Great rod, Dont like the reel though.

Re: Surf rod and reel combo spin
Just been flipping through the 2014 Shimano app and was wondering has any one seen or handle a Starlo Jungle Stick 922 spin. Not sure if they're available in stores or only online.

Re: Surf rod and reel combo spin
It's rated to 45 grams whereas the Catana is 30gm from memory? It'd be the way to go if you can push your budget out another $50 to accommodate the reel. They are going for $110 for the rod.
Edit, whoops. New Catanas are 45 grams too. I'm certain the old ones were less?

Re: Surf rod and reel combo spin
Nah but any shimano store would be able to get them in for you I'd guess.
