Newbie to forums and fishing

Post by burks » Sun Jun 29, 2014 2:06 pm

Hi everyone! Fished for the first time in my life with my father in law a few years ago, and he got my 4yo a combo for Christmas. We tried to take my son fishing at Easter, but all that happened is I caught the bug!

Been reading for the last few days, and looking at getting some new gear (have some very cheap 2nd hand gear that isn't great) before things warm up again. My sister lives on the gippsland lakes, and my wife's sister lives in warrnambool, so looking forward to a lot of fishing to come!

Any suggestions on a good all-round land-based rod & reel would be great (sorry if I shouldn't be asking that in this thread).

G'day Burks!

Welcome! Firstly, fishing is not a bug, bugs are bad, fishing is a passion, this is a positive thing and can only get you more fishing time from the missus if you refer to it as such!

For a decent entry level reel you can't go past a Shimano Sienna, good quality and will last you years if you look after it, and around the $50 mark should get you one from any self respecting retailer.

As for rods, any of the name brands like Shimano, Daiwa, Penn, Rovex have quality rods to suit any budget. I take it you're just looking for a General Purpose type of rod to start, so I'd suggest you pick up a rod in the 3-5kg range around the 7 foot mark would suffice. You could pick up a rod like that for around the $50 to $100 would give you a decent quality rod.

Lastly, if you think fishing is a bug you've got, then i must warn you, buying fishing tackle can be a really bad addiction for some!

Cheers,

Cam.

Cheers for the welcome guys, and especially for the info, cam.

In a 7' rod in the 3-5kg range, what kind of action would you recommend? My birthday is coming up in a month, so might write a list for the missus!

It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them
