Went to portland and birds were diving off the breakwall, so we casted lures in the hope, and the only thing to hit our lures were the birds.

Gannets are pretty good fun on light gear though

My Dad's missus hooked a seagull in the bay one day, that was interesting... trebles everywhere.

Agree about the swell though, it'd be nice if it dropped below 6ft once in a while.

Yeah, took a lure I was trolling for tuna. It was the first one I'd caught and wasn't sure how to safely unhook the ******.

Long story short, the cuts on my hand got infected and took over a month to heal fully

I have been renovating , so not much fishing. Did notice the Seals beating hell out of the Salmon last week while we surveyed the lakes Bar.

Regarding birds taking lures. I had a pelican grab one once. That was a rather difficult job to quietly get it alongside and unhook without damage to him or me. I came off second best. Fed him a fish afterwards. We were mates after that.

Headed down to Gunna Saturday morning with pretty low expectations given my recent history there, but high tide was around sunrise and a northerly wind at least the conditions were in my favor, although there was still 6ft of swell.

Got to the beach about 7 and saw a bait fisho dragging a fish up the beach as I was walking down the dunes so decided to have a couple of casts in the first gutter. Hooked up fourth cast but dropped it in the shore break.

It was quiet for the next hour or so, by that time I was well up the other end of the beach when I found a small patch of fish. Landed 5 and dropped another in the space of about 30 minutes, including 3 fish in 6 casts. The biggest would've been mid 50's and the smallest around 40, so all not bad fish.

Went quiet after that, got back to the car around 9:30. Didn't see another lure fisherman on the beach which was a bit surprising given the conditions.

I think all the lure fishos are waiting for someone else to post a report. Which means that reports are thin on the ground. Well done on giving it a go anyway.

Most of the regulars have given up on gunna this yr, it's been that bad.
