11ft long rod or more. 15lb to 20lb braid, 15lb to 20lb leader
Paternoster rig, blue bait on one and surf popper on the other. 3-4 oz star sinker, depends on your rod and the water condition.

so, i have an Alvey rod and reel combo, I got 20 lb braid on the reel and 30-pound leader.

will that work? I bought some metal lures, took the trebles off, and replaced them with singles. I got some surf poppers as well, I put singles on some of them and left the trebles on the other poppers. I put some of those hooks with the cord you use for jigging on one of the metal lures so I can do some jigging at port Albert pier.

Sounds like you should do alright mate.
I love my surf fishing as well. Just recently got back from a trip and smashed the sambos!
Hope you get onto some chunky ones as well 😃
Cheers 👍🏻

i would have thought an alvey would be pretty difficult for lure casting in the surf, ok for bait fishing, but maybe i'm wrong?

oh, its the orbiter. its a solid little reel and it looks great. I would highly recommend it. its Shimano quality, if not better.

I’ve found bait hard in the surf at times. I’ve always caught more salmon lures. Find a nice rock ledge with no snags and weed in front and have a crack
