If you head back round to St Kilda, hit me up. I live in St Kilda and have been trying to chase down the salmon for many months now only ended up with one flattie no bigger than my hand..

Yep Miker is spot on....watching birds is best though sometimes they are just under the water in certain areas and if you know that area has produced its always a good idea to throw out a lure or two to have a look see...MIKER wrote:^^

Help a noob out here fellas - fishing from a boat in PPB
Here are my questions and my attempt to answer them for myself:
- Where to fish for them
Frankston or St. Kilda
- What structure to look for
Feeding birds
Not sure?!?!
- When to fish for them
Presumably sun-up and sun-down?
- What bait or lures to use
Not sure?!?!

hiya dragonF.
I dont think you will have much luck these days in Frankston or St Kilda area for salmon. These are prime winter locations only.
This time of year, the big ones are close to the rip chasing krill. If you have a boat and want to tangle with these torpedoes, launch in Portsea area or queendscliff and head close to the rip. Watch for the birds. Look for the boiling water if birds are too scattered. Do not cut across the school of fish. Stay within casting distance or if trolling, circle around the school in such a way that when the boat turns your lure will be on the edge of the school. Hang tight! The salmon there are huge "black backs" with girt so huge your 2 hands wont touch each other when holding a big one. I suggest you use heavy line if you will be using expensive lures. Last time I took GoneFishing charters, they were using 60lb braid and 40 lbs mono. It was overkill but they never list a lure and being a charter boat, they possibly want to land as much fish as possible on the shortest possible time so every paying customer will get a chance. Going heavy is good business option for them. Good fight on light tackle. :super:
early morning or late afternon is best.
Lure is plastic squid, SP or metal slugs.
