Fly Fishing for Salmon

Would it be viable to fish for salmon, either boat or land based for salmon in the bay?

seen some guys do it last year land based off Sorrento. no idea what fly they were using though, but they were moving it like a lure.

Viable yes, probably not the best way to do it. Blue and white or silver fly i into a school will get eaten i guess.

Is the most productive no but if fly fishing is your bag go for it there was a show on c31 fly fishing they did an episode in the bay out of mordiallic they caught salmon . Sometimes you come across big schools of salmon busting the surface great fun casting to them would be the same with a fly

If you were in a boat you could either look for the salmon busting up or troll your fly until you get one then keep casting to the same spot where the school is. From land based berley up and cast your fly into the burley trail of you can wade places like barwon heads and cast into the gutters searching for fish. Flies you could use are pretty much any baitfish pattern tied on about a size 6 to 2 hook. Salmon are not to fussy and will hit just about anything that is moving quickly. But some of the better known salmon flies would be surf caddies, clousers and small poppers.
You could get away with a floating line most of the time unless the fish are down deep or there is a strong currant but a intermediate line would be best.

It can definitely be done, extremely fun with a large school of busting salmon if your into fly fishing and have decent gear. I have fly fished a few times for salmon off Williamastown when then around, i use a 2g zonker fly that, works well for salmon if there finicky. Also fishing likely areas land based with a bit of berley can get you a few small salmon and flathead.
