Slack line vs tight line pier fishing

Post by james rose » Tue Jan 27, 2015 9:14 am

Hi all,

Been doing a bit of pier fishing lately as opposed to boat which I'm used to.

Been using light weight running sinker rig on mono and have noticed off the pier my line appears to be the only slack line.

Also noticed most people seem to have two lines coming off the main line with a heavy sinker on the bottom, should I be changing to this rig?

Cheers for your help...

I've had trouble keeping the lines tight fishing off piers, beaches and rockwalls unless I've used a pretty heavy star sinker to provide some resistance. Someone else might have a better way of keeping them tight though.

off a pier i would use a 2 hook paternoster rig (the one you described), with a 2 or 3 oz sinker depending on the current, you want to hold the bottom

X2.
9/10 times i'd use a paternoster rig fishing land based. Occasionally I'd use a running rig only when I've got big baits out.

Also you can use anchor sinker. They are easy to get them back, but make sure you use 20 pounds+

Erm what? Im not sure anyone uses 20lb anchors on thier boats let alone to hold a rig in place. Haha.

Where abouts are you fishing? You wont need big sinkers in most of ppb but around the heads and in wpb you will need to upsize if the current is running.

Also, what species are you targetting?

No need for heavy bombs or heavy pyramid sinkers ... small light pyramid sinkers work a treat to hold the bottom !

providing there is little reef and weed or you may lose a few... but if it means getting into a few fish then so be it and lose some..

Cost of sinkers is nothing when you cost up all the bait you buy for a trip !
He who has the most fishing rods WINS ! :ts:

I think he meant 20lb line so you get your breakaway sinkers to come back without risking line breakage
