Flounder/shallow water spear fishing

Post by AE092 » Tue Mar 03, 2015 5:57 pm

Hey all,

Thought I'd ask for some general locations that produces on the eastern/Peninsula side of the bay. So far I've tried Seaford and Frankston for zilch however Blairgowrie has provided the odd squid and garfish. I'm thinking of trying Safety beach as well as Tootgarook next but the moon phase isn't ideal for the next couple of weeks so anyone can shed any input then that would be great. I'm also really after some flathead but the one's I've seen are no where near legal.

cheers

Strange you said Seaford didn't produce, I have done well there most trips, maybe just the night you went on ?

I have done really well at Limeburners lagoon in Geelong ... just watch out for the mud holes ! you sink up to your knees if not careful..

But most of it is hard sand.

Werribee south is a good spot also. Altona is a bit hit and miss but makes up for good sized frogs. Don't forget flounder are an estuarine species so target these areas.

Thanks for the input guys. I tried the beach just south of Blairgowrie and Sorrento for nothing. Saw a small flattie and flounder but that was it, conditions weren't ideal so I wasn't expecting much. I'll definitely give like burners a go next time I'm working in the area though

What kind of nights tend to work best for this approach? A full moon or a new moon? In other words, light or dark nights? I've never tried it myself, but definitely on the bucket list :)

I prefer moonless nights with no wind or as little wind as possible.

Very interested in this as of late, recently purchased a couple of spears and a light, is there anything else I'd need before I set out on my own? And any tips for spotting them? I've heard that Carrum is a good spot, but that was a while back. Whether or not it still is..
