New to fishing and new to the forum!

Post by greatadrian » Wed Mar 08, 2017 8:03 am

After viewing a handful of posts I am now sure that you lot are a helpful and welcoming bunch.

A year ago I tried to start fishing however only got a few trips into South Werribee where I caught a salmon however life has been busy. Now a year later I have much more spare time and am thinking of taking fishing up as a hobby.

When it comes to equipment, rigs, lures etc. I have all the basics + more recommended from my local BCF store.

This is where I need the help.

past three trips i've been trying to fish on the Maribyrnong river, once up north of Overnewton and twice at Brimbank park. However too many times already have I lost a squidgy and hook/sinker to a fallen tree branch/rock.

Is there a technique I could or should try to minimise that from happening? Would floats be useless in freshwater?
I am also up for taking recommendations in fishing around Western Victoria. Perhaps Melton region or towards Tullamarine.

Thank you in advance,
Adrian

Hi and welcome. Most of the lakes in melton hold carp which is a great way to hone your skills. darlingsford lake, exford weir. Bostock which is at Ballan is stocked with trout and chinook salmon, Pykes creek holds trout but they are few and far between.
