Maribyrnong River

Post by solararrow94 » Mon Jun 12, 2017 9:38 pm

Hi all,

I love close to the Maribyrnong River and didn't really think much of it, but I've decided to give it a go. Has anyone got any tips for the river? I'm thinking around the Canning St bridge would probably be my best shot. Is there anything else other than Bream in there?

Yes. There should be plenty of pinkies (and some bigger snapper) around. There should be mulloway around, too, but I'm not having much luck on them this year - and neither is anyone else if the 2017 mulloway section on this forum is anything to go by!

A few forum members got stuck into a good run of mulloway not long ago. I know of one member who almost racked up double digits in a couple of weeks. Them mulloway fisho's are tight-lipped though. But they are around! Your luck is bound to change soon.

Pinkies are there but you have to earn them.

But why are there no flatties in the 'nong? Or is that a separate topic?

There are flathead - not sure how common in winter, though? I've caught multiple decent flathead to 50cm / 1kg way up the Yarra, so no doubt they would be in the Maribyrnong too.

Many years ago as a youngster we used to fish the banks along Canning St where the park is now. We caught bream regularly on sand worms. What is the water quality like around there now, would any pinkies or bream be ok to eat or just catch and realease?

What have people been using to catch pinkies and mulloway?
