Flathead Type ID Please
Caught a few flatties on Sat out in PPB and just want to know if they are duskies or southern blue spotted. They were between 30 & 35 cm (pic attached).
Thanks

Pretty hard to tell what that one is on the left, it's definitely not a dusky though. The other ones are sand flathead.
You won't catch duskys in PPB
Bluespots almost grey in colour, they really do look like little baby gummies coming up in the water

Hi mate, I actually posted that pic showing the comparison lol. Now I'm confused - one person says blue spot (which is what the tail looks like) and someone else has said sand. Either way, if dusky aren't found in PPB then bag limit of 20cm and min size of 27cm so all good.seephil wrote:Funny how this ad came up under your post.

Thanks mate. The one on the left looked exactly the same as the rest (might be confusing as you are looking at the side of it). All the ones we caught pretty much looked identical. Ok, so you reckon dark sand flatties then?Kimtown wrote:Pretty hard to tell what that one is on the left, it's definitely not a dusky though. The other ones are sand flathead.

As for the OP.
extremely rare to catch a Dusky flathead in PPB, they are generally found in estuaries.
99% of the flathead caught in the bay is not a dusky so should be right..

Sand Flathead.
Yes you can catch duskys in PPB but it depends on the year. Normally end of December through early Jan if they are around.

there was a thing in the fisheries guide a few years ago. It mentioned that any flatty caught in the waters East of the gippsland lakes was considered to be a dusky to try stop confusion.
Majority of the fish in WP and PPB will be Sand, blue spot or tigers(but they are easy to tell the difference)
