Punch bowl

Post by rb85 » Sun Sep 15, 2019 6:31 pm

Police are searching for someone who has ended up in Bass Strait fishing Punchbowl near San Remo.

The swell isn’t massive but building with a decent swell period there’s no way I would have fished there this afternoon in those conditions. Hope for a miracle.

Yeah i saw that. It said close to 2mt swell on willy weather, I’ve only rock fished a couple of times and it’s been down that way, definitely gotta have your wits about you.

I’ve fished both sides of that place. Really got to make sure you get the conditions right before going. Hope they are ok!

Punchbowl in over a metre of swell is just asking for it. I hope this person is ok but on a day like today there is really no reason to go down there.

I am a massive advocate of rock fishing but you need to be aware of the dangers of situation. I wrote a long post about rock safety, there is a link in the first post of this thread. viewtopic.php?f=105&t=23090

Punchbowl on the right day is great the wrong day is an accident waiting to happen. Having dedicated a large portion of my life to being in around or on the ocean you learn a lot about day to day conditions. Today wasn’t a day to be on that ledge a safer option would have been a stroll to the inside of the eastern entrance from Woolamai.

Hope they're ok, dangerous place to be if it's your first time. I've fished there quite a few times and only produced at best a few salmon in the 45cm-50cm range and a heap of coutas. Plenty banjos n draftboards and plenty donuts too. I'm sure some here are more successful then I have but I won't be traveling 2hrs to fish here anytime soon. There are much safer rock fishing platforms that could produce same result just gotta watch that swell.

Probably the most over-rated and dangerous spot to rock fish in Victoria.

Not much chance of survival once you've been in the water for more than a few minutes, particularly in those conditions.

Just googled it, there no update yet. Hope he's okay.
Rock fishing can be very dangerous and not for everyone. Not for a newbie at least.
Stay safe all.
