Re: Furuno FCV-588
We have the smaller model. I'm no expert on with it but we haven't had any problems with it and certainly have marked fish on it.
Matt Cini from reel time only recommends these as sounded in the bay's.
Also, combine this with the higher end transducer you get an even better picture.

When you say only recommends the sounder in the Bays does he use something else offshore?yepi'mon wrote:We have the smaller model. I'm no expert on with it but we haven't had any problems with it and certainly have marked fish on it.

I highly doubt it mate as his boats aren't fitted with anything else... I did the snapper tuition awhile back and this was focused on setting up for the bay's. Obviously I don't want to speak for him as to how he suggests setting up for off shore.
He did have one of the more expensive furuno gps/sounder (I think) installed but reverted back to this as he reckons the dedicated sounding quality is much better.
I sat in the cabin with him whilst looking for fish and the picture quality was top notch.
If you do end up purchasing one I can send you his "setup" for the bay's.

Transducer plays a big big role in picture quality too. So don't forget about that and it's own setup

Re: Furuno FCV-588
Yep, he was running a 1kw transducer and the picture quality was far superior than our setup with the 600w. In saying that he also says that in WP he uses the 600w on low frequency in Westernport.cobby wrote:Transducer plays a big big role in picture quality too. Re: Furuno FCV-588
I have a 587 the previous model with an airmar p66 I like it its easy to use and with the rotary gain knob easy to adjust sensitivity whilst sounding around. It still picks up the bottom at 50 + kph.
I would like a 1kw transducer its on my list of upgrades for my boat

Re: Furuno FCV-588
We have 585 and a 627. Unless you are going to invest in a 1kw tranny just get the 627.
Both are excellent.

Re: Furuno FCV-588
Sorry I made a mistake mine is a 585 not a 587. my transducer failed several years ago and it was a through hull one when I went to replace it I was advised to just put it on the transom you loose some of the power (watts) shooting through the hull
