Foruno advice

Post by Nude up » Thu Mar 09, 2017 10:51 am

Hope some one can help, after seeing the results of my mates simrad with the 1kw transducer I am working towards getting a 1kw Tx. Here is my dilemma I have a foruno 585 when I bought the boat it had a airmar p79 installed which failed which is a through hull 600w Tx which is still installed , I installed a p66 600 watt transom mount Tx.
The question is do I install a p164 1kw through hull Tx and leave the p66 on the transom as a spare or do I replace the p66 with either a tm258 or a tm260 transom mount units. I already have a down vision Tx on the opposite side for my ray marine unit.
There is not much difference in the price the thro hull unit is a couple of hundred dollars cheaper keen to hear your thoughts and experiences

I would go the through hull transduce. Less disturbance at speed.

If you liked what your mate used I would find out what the beam angle was as this has a huge effect on what you can see.

IMO I think you would be better off with a wide angle 200kHz transducer.

Did you mean the B164 as I have not heard of a P164?
The B164 has a 50/200kHz 22 deg/6 deg beam.

The TM258 has a 50/200kHz 15 deg/3 deg beam.
The TM260 has a 50/200kHz 19 deg/6 deg beam.

My mates Tx is 23deg chirp I don't know much about chirp if that makes a massive difference I need to read up

Message mark Reid on Facebook. He is the main Australian furuno dude. Has helped me out in the past with advice regarding a 587. He will suggest the best for your situation.

23 deg would be close to ideal for finding fish bait balls ect.

Everything I have seen about chirp looks good and is certainly worthy of a look.

I have been doing a bit of research compressed high intensity radar pulse unfortunately my head unit can not use a chirp Tx but it can take a broadband. Foruno are about to release a chirp sounder but a complete upgrade is out of the question. I am leaning towards the b164

We have a transom mount 1kw which is similar to the B164 (I cant remember the exact number of hand)

For less than 20m ie PPB I use LF/HF mode as LF has greater coverage and finds fish and HF gives great bottom detail for finding structure.

For game fishing LF ie 50kHz only which works but doesn't give any where near the level of detail that you can get with 200kHz.

Ideally I would like a transducer with 200kHz with a wider beam for game fishing.
